ARTLIA's art prints are produced according to standardized paper and canvas formats.

Depending on the aspect ratio of the original artwork and the chosen format, it may happen that the edges of the image are slightly adjusted to achieve a harmonious overall effect and high print quality.

For canvas prints, the ARTLIA team ensures that the main motif is placed as fully as possible on the front side. The side frame areas are continued in color and style to match the original image.

This is a deliberate and common production step with which the ARTLIA team ensures the aesthetic quality of each artwork.

Waiting by Edgar Degas

Artist: Edgar Degas
Creation: around 1879
Technique: Pastel on paper
Dimensions: approx. 70 × 50 cm (several versions exist)
Related works: among others in the Musée d'Orsay

Description of the Work

The picture shows a young ballerina behind the stage, bending over to adjust her pointe shoe or ankle. Next to her sits a darkly dressed companion – presumably mother or chaperone – with a closed umbrella on a bench.

Degas does not focus on the dazzling stage moment but on the waiting and preparation. The postures appear natural, unposed, and almost unobserved, creating a quiet, tense atmosphere just before the performance.

The pastel technique allows for nuanced color design: The tutu appears soft and translucent, while the background is kept in warm ochre tones. The asymmetrical composition and the cropped picture space clearly show the influence of photographic perspectives.

Meaning and Fame

  1. Modern choice of subject: Degas chooses not the dramatic appearance but the inconspicuous moment of waiting – an approach that was considered radically modern at the time.

  2. Central theme: Ballet scenes are a recurring motif in Degas’ work. This picture condenses his intense engagement with movement, study of the body, and spatial effect.

  3. Masterful pastel technique: Degas used pastel not only as a drawing tool but as a full-fledged painterly medium. Through layering and smudging, depth and subtle light effects arise.

  4. Unusual composition: The side arrangement of the figures and the cropped picture space create a photographic spontaneity.

  5. Social subtext: The contrast between the young dancer and the darkly dressed companion points to the social structures of the Paris ballet in the 19th century.

The work is regarded as a prime example of Degas’ contribution to modern painting: It does not show the spectacular stage event but the quiet, tension-filled moment before it.
