This work was created to mark the end of Lia Broecker-Jakob’s stay in Rome. The artist, born in Croatia and living in Germany for many years, had the opportunity to live in Rome for several years – an experience that deeply influenced both her artistic work and her personal life.
The openness of Italian, especially Roman, culture towards art as well as the palpable warmth in interpersonal relations inspired the artist. Addio Roma expresses both gratitude and wistfulness – a visual farewell greeting to a city that opened new horizons for her.
In the upper right area of the image, the Colosseum appears as an iconic symbol of Rome, pointing to the city’s historical depth and temporal dimension. Other image elements, such as the ginkgo leaf especially cherished by the artist and fragments of ancient relics, intertwine personal memory with cultural heritage. Lines and scattered shapes act like traces that make fragments of memory and emotional impressions visible.
The color scheme is characterized by delicate blue and turquoise tones, earthy ochre, and warm rust shades. The transparent-looking layers recall the light and atmosphere of the Mediterranean region, while the earthy tones evoke the materiality of ancient ruins. The colors blend softly and form a multi-layered, almost floating composition – a subtle metaphor for the complex feelings of farewell.
The monotype technique emphasizes this uniqueness: as a non-reproducible printing method, it points to the irreplaceability of that phase of life in Rome.
