Poster - White Ox, Lee Jung-seob artlia

What do we see in this poster White Ox, Lee Jung-seob?

This impressive work was created in 1954 by Korean artist Lee Jung-seob – just one year after the end of the devastating Korean War (1950–1953). In a time of deep social upheaval and personal suffering, this image emerged as a quiet testament to strength, grief, and hope.

Lee Jung-seob lived in a Korea that was under Japanese colonial rule for decades (1910–1945) and after World War II became once again the scene of geopolitical conflicts. The Korean War destroyed not only cities and landscapes but also families. Amid this turmoil, the artist decided to send his wife and children to Japan, where living conditions were safer. He remained alone in a torn country – separated from his loved ones, plagued by loneliness, but determined to stay strong.

The motif of the white ox carries deeply rooted symbolism in Korean culture: it stands for endurance, humility, quiet strength, and the ability to keep going even under the toughest conditions. In this image, the ox becomes a multifaceted metaphor – for the battered but steadfast Korean people as well as for the artist himself, who did not give up in his loneliness.

The “White Ox” is thus more than an animal portrait. It is a symbol of a generation, an expression of an inner struggle, a mirror of personal as well as collective experience. Vulnerable, yet dignified – quiet, but full of inner movement.

This art print on high-quality poster paper brings the emotional depth and symbolic power of Lee Jung-seob's original into today's space – as an invitation to pause, remember, and reflect on the strength found in silence.
