What do we see in this artwork?
This printed wall art on a poster with frame and mat, “Crane Family,” depicts a scene from nature. Normally, images of cranes would be associated primarily with Asia, but in this case we see a reinterpretation of this classic motif. At the center of the image is a family of five cranes standing in a body of water. We do not know exactly where this is. Perhaps it is a pond or a lake. The birds are rendered purely in black and white and show very few details. They appear to be hunting small fish or crabs. Around the animals, we see reeds. They tower over the cranes and almost conceal them from view. The plants are also painted only in black and show no details apart from a few leaves on the stems. The water itself is rendered in a gray-brown tone and is almost unrecognizable were it not for the white reflections of light on its surface. They give the image a hypnotic appearance.
