Sun, Moon, and Five Peaks, in Korean Irworobongdo (일월오봉도)
This artwork depicts the traditional Korean motif “Sun, Moon, and Five Peaks” (Irworobongdo, 일월오봉도), one of the most significant symbols of the royal art and court culture of the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910).
The depiction consists of five distinctive mountain peaks, a red sun, a white moon, two waterfalls, flowing water, and pine trees on both sides. The sun and moon refer to the cosmic order, while the five peaks symbolize the power, dignity, and authority of the king. As a whole, the composition embodies the royal order and the desire for the dynasty to endure forever.
Korean folding screen with Irworobongdo
This object is not a classic Korean folding screen, but a single-panel, freestanding screen. The painted silk fabric is stretched over a wooden frame. Such screens served both as decorative elements and as representative furnishings in the Korean royal court.
The use of the Irworobongdo motif behind the king's throne is particularly well known. The screen served as a symbolic backdrop and emphasized the monarch's elevated status. Comparable screens were also used in rooms where royal portraits were stored, created, or displayed.
Connection to royal portraits
A distinctive feature of this screen is the presence of two rollers on the upper part of the wooden frame. They may have been used to hang royal portraits while they were being created and make them available for inspection.
Historical records from 1901 and 1902 document folding screens with a very similar construction. These parallels suggest that such screens had a special function in connection with the creation and storage of royal portraits.
The folding screen thus combines the symbolic visual world of Irworobongdo with the representative culture of the Korean royal court. It is an impressive example of the significance of Korean court art, royal iconography, and craftsmanship during the Joseon period.
