Fantastic Beasts of Happiness and Harmony (Seosudo, 서수도)

Seosudo is a genre of painting from the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910) that depicts lucky and mythical animals believed to possess special spiritual powers. These works were far more than decorative images: they served as pictorial expressions of wishes for happiness, long life, harmony, and protection.

The depicted animals are regarded as bearers of benevolent energies and are often shown together with their offspring. In this way, they symbolically stand for marital harmony and the wish for many children. Central motifs include the Qilin, a giraffe-like mythical creature symbolizing a peaceful and just era, as well as the Haetae, believed to have the ability to distinguish right from wrong and to protect against fire. These animal depictions are complemented by lucky fruits such as the peach as a sign of longevity and the Buddha’s hand citron, which stands for blessing and prosperity.

Seosudo enjoyed great popularity both at the royal court and among the general populace. In the imagery of fantastic beasts, the shared hopes of the people of the Joseon era for a peaceful, harmonious, and fulfilled life are condensed.

This is not a poster. It has real ink used to make it pop and looks like something closer to an original. I will have it framed and a special gel process used that will make it look even more real so pleased with this piece
